Dear Mrs. Sylvana,
I am all the time in contact with Mr. Ožaković, the man who is the only one fighting for the dogs in Benkovac. He told me few minutes ago that he is around shelter and cannot go in ( the director from garbige firm "Ivica Erlić" dont give him key from the shelter)
Now again one dog is dead. Other dog (in the picture) is in very bad condition. I will call tomorow the Mayor from Benkovac and speak with him.
Please send protest letters - that they still do not care for the dogs. I trust only Mr. Ožaković, because I know he really take care for this dogs. We want him back to the shelter to be sure that dogs are ok in the future.
We must do all quickly because I am really very afraid for these poor animals.

It is simply horrible.
German journalist called the chief vet.inspector Mrs Branka Bukovic-Sosic who stated that everything is fine, the animals is being taken care of and Dinko Ozakovic is incompetent. It´s not the truth !!!
Political pressure works these days. The point is disinformation from the source. The politicians listen to the mayor, the mayor tells lies, the public hardly receives information. WE must act on the civil level. The media is our only hope, and only when those report, in Austria, Germany, Croatia, Bosnia and other places, then the politicians will understand that something must happen.
This is horribly and we are close to our tears here...
The question is if anybody is able to enter the shelter. The locks have been changed and nobody is let in. The animals suffer, Dinko begs to get access, but nothing…
The best thing to do is spreading the story and photos on forums and send them to internet portals, tourist agencies, demand to boycott Croatia trips, and to journalists. The tourists are 'the hens that lay the golden eggs' for the Croats. This is the only sensitive point of the politicians.
For those who read Croatian, please go through this forum, where you find plenty information:
http://www.forum.hr/showthread.php?t=335838
Thank you for all your help, the interest and possible try to spread this bad news! We all do our best to help the poor animals in Benkovac !

This comes from my contact in Croatia:
"I am really going insane.
Dinko said this morning that he fed the dogs by the fence
Those locked into the boxes though he cannot – and the locked-up cat apparently has gone insane in there.
He's on the brink of breaking the locks and cutting the fence again.
He gave me the mobile number of the mayor who is travelling on business for 2-3 days.
I called, but he did not take the call.
Then he called me back and tried to convince me with "political arguments" …
I told him he can stuff fit and that the problem we had with each other was not to be payed for by the animals …
He laughed when I told him the cat had gone crazy.
He had no idea that the sheepdog had died – he plays stupid, like … "What sheepdog" ??
Also, that they are doing all they could and feed the animals .. "come here and have a look" (he said).

Dear all,
I must say that after our inspection from 27th May in dog shelter in Benkovac we are more disappointed. Most of that dogs are very nice and screaming for human company and love. The worker which change at the moment Mr. Ožaković does not much care for them, so they have not fresh water every day and enough food to eat for all of them as we saw. In the front of the shelter there are 10 puppies about 2 months old. As we saw they all have worms in their stomac, and they are full of parazites. None dog had been vaccinated. During the converzation between Mrs. Šošić -Mr. Goričanac_-Erlić_ Erstić we realized that all that people do not care for poor dogs. For Mr. šošić important things are papers and paragrafs and the way she can escape far away from all this scandal and newspapers.
Mr. Mirko Erstić, the Mayor from Benkovac promised us many times better conditions for the dogs but til now there are no changes. We saw also that in the shelter are not more than 40 dogs (including puppies in the front).
Best greetings,
Dolores

To
Mrs Branka Bukovic Sosic
Vet Inspector and Animal Welfare Chief for Croatia
Dear Mrs. Sosic,
I have been given to understand that you have visited the BENKOVAC municipality shelter yesterday, 27th of May.
As much concern has been expressed of late - from within Croatia and without - about the situation at said shelter I would be most grateful for your assessment.
No doubt you are aware of the many negative reports - in the press and otherwise - that have been published over the last weeks describing the dismal situation at the shelter. Photographic evidence that supports the accusations of animals deliberately being starved to death inside exists, as well as eyewitness accounts of the extreme suffering of the helpless dogs and cats behind those locked gates. About half of the original number of animals is said to have disappeared, although no "official" euthanasia has been undertaken.
Where have they gone ?
As no information and no answers to the questions of the international animal welfare community is forthcoming from the office of Mayor Erstic and Mr. Erlic (for "Benkovic d.o.o.", the company who owns and runs the shelter) it would be most helpful if you were kind enough to furnish me - and us - with the impressions you have gained during your visit yesterday and how your office intends to address the issue.
I think it seems clear that something is seriously amiss at the BENKOVAC shelter and I am confident your office will wish to act immediately to correct the situation and uphold the Croatian Animal Welfare legislation and its very clear legal guidelines in respect to animal care in shelters such as this.
I am very much looking forward to your conclusive reply.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
Diana Hartig

I can only say thank you to all your iniciatives concerning conditions in animal shelter in Benkovac and also for help of other organisations. I know, it would be much better to replay to all of your messages every day but I take my time to improve the situation in the shelter. Now I am going to make the note which will be sent to all organizations and all others interested in this matter and, of course, also to your organisation. Just for your information, we are doing many things to improve the conditions in this shelter and it will be visible in a few days.

Dear Sylvana,
After all this fighting with the responsable persons in Benkovac, they started to working in shelter and now we are sure that poor dogs will have better conditions to live. On June, 6th our team from "Felix"-Krk and "Lady and the Tramp"-Lovran, together with Organization from Cakovec were visiting shelter in Benkovac and Zadar and took some dogs from there. We took all 15 dogs, 4 dogs we took to our dog-hotel "Sapice" near Opatija. We planing to go again there for few days and to took more dogs. All dogs are vaccinated and chipped, but we must do it here for the infected illness. I send you in attachment some pictures from yesterday.
Last month peoples left some dogs also to Mr. Ožaković old house in the village where only lives his old mother. So we work also to take care about this dogs. During this affair people do not like to take dogs to the shelter in Benkovac and left them there.
Best greetings, hear you soon...
Dolores

Postovani,

Hochachtungsvoll
